Safety & Health in the Arts,
from an Artist’s Point of View
An “entertaining and enlightening” workshop AND, it’s FREE!
**Monona Rossol is considered an expert in the field of art safety. She is an actress, an art teacher (MFA), an industrial hygienist, the Safety Officer for local USA829 of the Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) AND she is often asked to testify in court for those who have gotten ill or have been injured in the field of art. She “wrote THE book on art safety” – The Artist’s Complete Health and Safety Guide, and many more publications. You won’t find a more informative and yet entertaining speaker on the subject of ART SAFETY. The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office at SUNY Brockport is providing this one-of-a-kind workshop on art safety FREE OF CHARGE. You will learn something new about the materials you work with every day – I guarantee it.
This workshop is open to all artists (academic, private, or aspiring) who wish to learn more about art safety or other professionals in the safety area. The workshop is scheduled for May 12, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. (with a break for lunch) in the Tower of Fine Arts Theater. We ONLY ask that you register for the workshop by contacting SUNY Brockport EHS @ mquill@brockport.edu or call 585/395-2907.
Artists use chemicals and materials to create art – it’s a fact of life. But, some artists are unaware of the hazards of the materials they are working with. If you teach others in the art field, it is even more important that you are knowledgeable of the potential hazards associated with art materials AND how to use them safely. SUNY Brockport EHS will also offer (highly recommended) a basic Right-to-Know/Art Safety workshop for those who are not familiar with the basics of chemical safety, exposure routes, toxicology and Material Safety Data Sheets. If you have not been previously trained or have forgotten the basics of art product safety, you should plan to attend one of these 2 hours workshops. Otherwise, Monona’s advanced presentation on more specific and complex art safety issues may not make as much sense.
This Right-to-Know/Art Safety training will be offered (FREE) by EHS on May 10, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Room 120 and May 11, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Room 102 (both) in the Tower of Fine Arts, . Please contact Marion Quill, EHS Assistant at mquill@brockport.edu or call 395-2907 to register for any of the workshop offerings, above.
Thank you for your interest in safety & health and I look forward to seeing you at the workshop(s). Also, please note that the Rochester Institute of Technology is offering a Theater Safety workshop on May 11, the day before. Contact Jody Nolan at jbncps@rit.edu for more information.
